Developing a Morning Practice

Morning meditation practice

What better way to start off the day!

Why have a morning practice? Many people find if they start off the day with their practice they experience greater emotional control, less stress, greater ability to handle conflict and problems, more physical and mental vitality and a greater sense of well-being and connectiveness.

What do I mean when I say the word 'practice'? Having a 'practice' can mean many different things for many people. In general, it’s a time set aside everyday before you start ANYTHING else. It’s a time to empower, to heal, to connect, to form intent, to start the day off just right . . . .your practice should be designed based on your own belief systems, whether your spiritual or religious, or none of the above.

Here is an outline for how to design your morning practice:

1. Schedule your morning. Do your practice after your shower. This is especially important if you’re going to meditate. You want to avoid any heavy meals directly before or after your practice. While in the shower do a salt scrub from head to toe. Remember to put the salt in the armpits and perineum as well. This is important for the health of the prostate, the health of the breasts and also the neck, shoulders and upper back. The salt scrub will assist in cleaning you up energetically.

2. Connect. If you’re spiritual or religious, start off with a prayer or invocation. Use words that feel right for you.

3. Exercise. Your choice! Whatever you like to do, get that body moving. Run, go to the gym, yoga, living room dance party. Most importantly make sure you move your body from head-to-toe. This is to help break up any energetic blockages in the energy body. It also helps to release diseased or dirty energy.

4. Breathing exercises. There are so many great breathing exercises out there. If you’re just starting out, an easy one to do is to practice breathing from your belly. Put one hand on the navel, expand the belly on the inhale and contract the belly on the exhale. I know this feels counterintuitive! But it’s a great thing to practice because it has so many healing benefits. As you get used to breathing this way, you can start to introduce a pause between the inhale and exhale.

For example, put your hand on your navel. Inhale naturally, no specific counting required. At the top of your inhale, hold the breath for a moment. Exhale. Hold the breath out for a moment. Repeat. Let the breath be smooth and natural. Holding the breath like this is a great way to generate life force for your body. It can be very energizing. Continue to practice for a few minutes. You should feel awake and relaxed after this one.

5. Meditation. Whatever your practice, now is a good time to meditate. Meditate in the same spot every day. Turn off your phones, don't let anything distract you. This is your time. If you’re looking for a meditation suggestion, try the Meditation on Twin Hearts for Planetary Peace.

6. Exercise again. This is very important before and after meditation to avoid congestion. These can be simple exercises or jumping and shaking to get the energy moving.

7. Healing. For anyone that has a healing modality in the toolbox now is a good time to do some self-healing. Meditation will help bring stuff to the surface to be cleared. Know your weaknesses, know your strengths. Where does the mind and body need some extra TLC? What are you working on? What would you like to develop? Take this time for yourself.

8. Now that you've connected up and have had a lovely spiritual shower bless your finances and your projects. Bless the day. All the meetings, your co-workers, your projects and your job. Use that spiritual energy to help improve things in the material world.

We've made time for our Morning Practice and now it is time to be in the world. I wish you constancy in your practice and hope you enjoy your days.
